How often should you use a collagen mask, and how long should it actually stay on? Two questions almost everyone asks as soon as the first sachet arrives. The answer you read everywhere (15 to 20 minutes, a few times a week) is right for a paper sheet mask, but not for a hydrogel mask like the ones from Comformidable. Those stay on a lot longer. In this article you will read exactly how often, how long, in which order and what to do with the serum that is left over.
What a collagen mask does (and what it does not)
A collagen sheet mask is a caring mask that seals your skin for a while, so the serum with collagen, hyaluronic acid and other hydrating ingredients can sink in at its own pace. The result is skin that feels plumper and looks fresher right after use. What it does not do: remove wrinkles or "top up" the collagen in your skin. Collagen is a large molecule that stays on the surface of your skin. There it holds on to moisture, and that is exactly where the effect comes from.
Want to know more about what is in the masks and why collagen is so popular in skincare? You can read that in our introduction to collagen face masks. This article is about how to use them.
How often should you use a collagen mask?
Once or twice a week is enough for most people. A sheet mask is an extra, not a replacement for your daily cleanser and moisturiser. More often is allowed, but adds little: your skin can only absorb a certain amount of moisture at a time.
A few guidelines that work well in practice:
- Dry or tired skin, especially in autumn and winter when the heating is on: twice a week.
- Sensitive skin: start with once a week and see how your skin responds.
- Before a party, wedding or photoshoot: the evening before, so your skin looks rested the next morning.
A fixed moment helps. Many people pick Sunday evening, so the week starts with fresh skin.
How long should a collagen mask stay on?
This is where it often goes wrong. The Comformidable masks are two-piece hydrogel masks, not a thin sheet of paper. You leave them on for 2 to 4 hours, or simply a whole night. After a quarter of an hour the mask is nowhere near done with its work. Only have an hour? That works too, you already get a lot more out of it than with fifteen minutes.
Here is why: a hydrogel mask releases its serum slowly. You can see it on the mask itself, which gets thinner and more transparent over the hours as your skin absorbs the serum. Take it off after twenty minutes and you throw most of the serum away.
Want to wear it overnight? That works fine. The mask stays put, even if you sleep on your side. Put a towel on your pillow the first time if you like.
How to use the mask step by step
- Cleanse your face and pat it dry. A toner is fine, but not necessary.
- Open the sachet and take out the two pieces: one for your forehead and eyes, one for your cheeks, nose and chin.
- Place the top piece and smooth it out from the middle outwards. Do the same with the bottom piece. Air trapped underneath? Lift it slightly and press it down again.
- Leave the mask on for 2 to 4 hours, or sleep with it on.
- Remove the mask and massage the remaining serum in with your fingertips. Do not rinse. Whatever is left on your neck and hands, just rub in there.
- Finish with your usual day or night cream.
Where does it fit in your routine?
The mask comes after cleansing and before your moisturiser. Skip the serums or oils you normally use that evening; the mask already delivers enough. Daytime works too, for instance on a quiet Sunday morning, but the evening is more practical because you do not have to leave the house wearing a mask.
Do you also use a retinol or an acid in the evening? Do that on a different evening. A mask is meant as a rest moment for your skin.
Does a collagen mask need to go in the fridge?
No, that is not necessary. Storing it cool and dry is enough. Nice to do though: put the sachet in the fridge for an hour before you use it. A cool mask feels refreshing, especially on a warm day or on a tired face. Use an opened sachet straight away, otherwise the serum dries out.
Which mask suits you?
You use the three masks in exactly the same way. The difference is in the ingredients:
- Dry skin or fine lines: the Collagen Hydra Lift Mask with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide.
- Dull or tired skin: the Collagen Glow Boost Mask with vitamin C and green tea.
- Redness or sensitive skin: the Collagen Calm Balance Mask with cica and aloe vera.
All masks are fragrance-free and come four to a box. At one mask a week, a box lasts you a month. You will find them together in the skincare collection.
Frequently asked questions
How often can you use a collagen mask?
Once or twice a week. More often does no harm, but your skin only absorbs a limited amount of moisture at a time, so it adds little.
How long should a collagen mask stay on?
You leave the Comformidable hydrogel masks on for 2 to 4 hours or a whole night. One hour works too if you are short on time. The 15 to 20 minutes you often read applies to paper sheet masks.
Do you need to rinse off the serum?
No. Massage what is left into your skin and then apply your usual moisturiser.
What does a collagen mask do?
The mask temporarily seals your skin so the serum with collagen and hyaluronic acid can sink in. Your skin holds on to moisture better as a result and feels plumper and softer after use.
